Located on the scenic Wild Coast of South Africa – the former homeland known as the Kingdom of Transkei – sits the Mdumbi Backpackers lodge, overlooking an idyllic, untouched beach.
A community driven incentive, Mdumbi Backpackers won the 2014 World Responsible Tourism Award and, in conjunction with TransCape, it strives to promote broad based community involvement in sustainable eco-tourism. 30% of Mdumbi Backpackers is owned by local employees, and 10% of its profits goes to a local legal entity representing the community and 9% to TransCape.
This region is the cultural homeland and natural habitat of the Xhosa speaking or Pondo people, and their rich culture and traditions remain intact even today. To preserve the beautiful land it calls home, Mdumbi constantly explores better systems of energy generation, recycling and economical sharing.
